City of Toronto Unveils Host City Poster for FIFA World Cup 2026™
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Toronto proudly revealed its official FIFA World Cup 2026™ Host City poster during a special event at the Toronto Archives. Designed by celebrated Toronto-based illustrator Dave Murray, the poster captures the vibrant energy and spirit of both the global tournament and the city it represents.

Selected from over 550 applicants who responded to a design call last fall, Murray’s visually striking piece will elevate Toronto’s presence on the world stage. It encapsulates the passion for soccer and the diverse dynamism that makes Toronto unique.

A Visual Celebration of Toronto

Murray’s artwork features a dynamic player in motion, strikingly set against a stylized red maple leaf, symbolizing the grandeur of the FIFA World Cup™ and Canada’s growing soccer scene. The composition celebrates Toronto’s identity, with a soccer ball positioned over the downtown core, symbolizing the Toronto Stadium.

Other design elements include:

  • A grid pattern representing Toronto’s street layout, serving as a quilt symbolizing the city’s diversity and vibrant neighborhoods.
  • Arced lines reminiscent of football pitch markings, symbolizing the unifying hemispheres of the world — fitting for a city known as “the world in a city.”
  • A blue color palette honoring the Flag of Toronto.

Dave Murray’s distinct artistic style, blending influences from cubism, deco, and futurism, shines throughout the design. With over a decade of experience, Murray’s portfolio includes collaborations with global brands like the 2024 MLB Postseason and the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

Community Engagement and Poster Unveiling

Toronto residents and sports fans can view the poster at prominent events, including the Toronto Raptors game on March 28 and Toronto FC’s home game against the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 29.

The poster submission process invited local artists and designers to showcase their creativity. A jury panel of experts, including Canadian FIFA Legend Dwayne De Rosario, selected five semi-finalists before awarding the honor to Murray. The jury featured industry professionals like Dominic Ayre (graphic designer), Mitchell F. Chan (artist), Erich “Heinz” Rigonan (Remix Project), and curator Yan Wu.

Preserving Legacy and Looking Ahead

Toronto’s Host City poster will be preserved in the Toronto Archives, ensuring its enduring legacy as a part of the city’s historic involvement with the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

This marks the first time individual Host City posters have been featured for a FIFA World Cup™. Each of the 16 Host City posters is being unveiled online between March 18 and April 17, with all designs available for purchase starting April 19, 2025.

Toronto will host six matches, including the first FIFA World Cup™ men’s match on Canadian soil on June 12, 2026, and a round of 32 match on July 2, 2026. Government contributions from Canada and Ontario will support infrastructure and logistics to ensure a successful event.

Celebrating the Moment

As Toronto anticipates this monumental event, Mayor Olivia Chow and other prominent figures emphasized the unifying spirit of the tournament:

> “The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is more than just a tournament—it’s a chance for our city to come together, celebrate our diversity, and share our passion for the game with the world. Let’s make this a moment that unites our communities and leaves a lasting legacy.” – Mayor Olivia Chow

Dave Murray expressed his pride: > “Designing Toronto’s Host City poster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been an incredible honor. Projects like this showcase the power of art and sport to unite communities. I hope this design inspires pride and excitement for what’s to come.”

As Toronto gears up to welcome the world, the city extends its heartfelt thanks to all artists who participated in this creative journey, highlighting the integral role of local talent in making this event unforgettable.
