Kavita Krishnamurthy, in a conversation with Usha Pudukkotai, shares insights into her illustrious career and passion for live performance ahead of the Bollywood Monster Mashup Concert in Toronto. Known for iconic songs like “Dola Re Dola,” “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” “Hawa Hawai,” and “Tu Hi Re,” Kavita has become a beloved figure in Hindi cinema music.
Dr. L. Subramaniam, her husband and collaborator, is a celebrated violinist and composer who has significantly influenced both Indian and Western classical music. Hailed as a “Paganini and Poet,” he has made substantial contributions to music through his compositions and performances.
With a foundation in both Indian and Western classical music, he has collaborated with legendary artists like Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. Subramaniam founded the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival in memory of his father, which has become a renowned concert series worldwide. His dedication to music has earned him prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. Together, Kavita and Subramaniam bring a rich blend of Bollywood and classical music, offering audiences a unique and enchanting experience.
In the interview, Kavita reflects on her journey and humility despite being considered one of the most talented artists of all time. When asked about her status, she expresses gratitude, saying, “As a matter of fact, I have heard so much great music since childhood, that when I became a playback singer, I never thought of myself as a very great singer. So, I am grateful to God for that.” She cherishes songs like “Hawa Hawai,” “Tu Hi Re,” and tracks from “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and “Devdas,” enjoying the beauty of their compositions. “I just love all these songs. I can sing them daily and never feel bored because the compositions are so beautiful,” she shares.
Kavita expresses her love for singing various genres, emphasizing the joy of performing songs with Indian raagas. “I love singing all kinds of songs, including slow ballads, and happy, cheerful dance numbers. I just feel if the song is beautifully decorated and a good composition with the lyrics that really match, then I enjoy doing them. But of course, I love songs with Indian raagas a lot,” she explains.
Dr. Subramaniam’s advice to aspiring singers is to pursue music sincerely, practice diligently, and stay focused, as there are no shortcuts to success. “It’s a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into it. You must be very focused and practice a lot. Without practice in any field, I don’t think you can be perfect,” he advises.
The duo eagerly anticipates the Mississauga concert, praising the local audiences and highlighting the unique combination of her Bollywood style with Dr. Subramaniam’s classical expertise, promising a diverse musical experience.
“We’re definitely looking forward to our concert in Mississauga. I’ve always felt the audiences in Toronto are wonderful. We both are different types of artists, I am Bollywood and Dr. L. Subramaniam is very classical. So, the audiences will get to enjoy a different type of concert when we perform.”
