Aviator Gopi Thotakura expressed his pride in being the first Indian to embark on a space tourism journey, joining Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin NS-25 mission. The launch, which marked Blue Origin’s seventh human flight, saw Thotakura and five others soar into space from Launch Site One in West Texas on Sunday, culminating in a successful landing. Thotakura, aged 30, not only became India’s inaugural space tourist but also the second Indian to venture into space since Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984.
During the flight, Thotakura was captured on video by Blue Origin, declaring, “India into space,” while proudly displaying the Indian flag. Additionally, he held a banner proclaiming his commitment to environmental stewardship with the message, “I am an eco-warrior for our sustainable planet.”
Accompanying Thotakura on this historic journey were fellow astronauts Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L Hess, Carol Schaller, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight. Despite being selected as the nation’s first Black astronaut candidate in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, Dwight had not previously had the opportunity to fly into space.
This mission marked the seventh human flight for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program and the 25th in its history. Notably, New Shepard has now carried 37 individuals into space. The program’s aim is to promote space tourism, with New Shepard being a fully reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle.
Thotakura, a seasoned pilot and aviator, co-founded Preserve Life Corp, a wellness and health center near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. His diverse piloting experience ranges from commercial jets to bush planes, gliders, and hot air balloons. Additionally, he has served as an international medical jet pilot. A graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Thotakura’s passion for exploration has taken him to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
During the NS-25 mission, passengers experienced weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth through the cabin windows as the rocket surpassed the Kármán line, delineating the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. Each astronaut carried a postcard on behalf of Blue Origin’s Club for the Future, aimed at inspiring future generations to pursue careers in STEAM fields.
From an environmental perspective, New Shepard boasts nearly 99% reusability, with its engine running on highly efficient liquid oxygen and hydrogen, resulting in only water vapor emissions during flights. Despite setbacks, including a liftoff malfunction in September 2022, Bezos’ space company remains committed to advancing suborbital tourism while maintaining environmental sustainability.
