Sports unites us, sparks pride and strengthens the communities we call home. Hosting world-class sporting events not only celebrates athletic excellence, but also delivers significant social and economic impact.

Yesterday, Mike Kelloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade and Member of Parliament for Sydney-Glace Bay, announced federal support to help the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) host the IIHF U18 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Membertou and Sydney ($250,000). The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The contribution is assisting the CBRM and its co-host, the Cape Breton Blizzards, with activities such as venue preparation, event coordination, and marketing. This tournament is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the region, driving substantial economic activity during the off-season. It also showcases Cape Breton as a premier destination for high-profile sports and community experiences.

“The IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship is more than a sporting event—it brings people together, showcases top talent, and grows participation in women’s sports. By welcoming visitors from around the world and highlighting Cape Breton’s hospitality and infrastructure, this event strengthens tourism, builds partnerships, and creates valuable opportunities for local businesses.”
– The Honourable Sean Fraser, P.C., K.C., Member of Parliament for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
