Usha: Welcome to Toronto! We’re thrilled to have you here. I’m from Namaste magazine, and I’d love to know what the audience can expect from your concert.

Hariharan: Well, They can look forward to a truly outstanding show. and it will be an exceptional musical experience for the audience. I always strive to give my best in all my concerts. Tomorrow’s show will feature a mix of Hindi, Indian, and Urdu music, including Bollywood numbers, ghazals, and a unique segment with my son, Akshay, where we blend my evergreen Bollywood hits with electronic dance music.

Usha: That sounds exciting. Will you be performing any Tamil, Telugu, or Malayalam songs, or is it exclusively Hindi?

Hariharan: We might hum a few, but you see, when we plan a concert, it’s meticulously structured, like clockwork. Making sudden changes can disrupt both us and the musicians. So maybe I’ll surprise the audience with a Tamil or Telugu song impromptu.

Usha: Perfect. I’m curious, do you think the younger generation still appreciates ghazals, qawwali, and Sufi music?

Hariharan: It’s not about the genre, but more about a clean soundscape and foot-tapping rhythms. Younger audiences have an affinity for music that resonates deeply, seeking novelty beyond the familiar. Their desire is for an evolution, a fresh perspective on what they’ve grown accustomed to. Having graced the stage for many years, I’ve come to understand the significance of embracing change and staying relevant Youngsters appreciate soulful music and something different from what we’ve heard. They seek an upgrade. Over my years of performing, I’ve come to embrace the value of adaptation and staying relevant.

Usha: That’s insightful. Among your vast repertoire, what’s your personal favorite?

Hariharan: It’s tough to pick just one. Bombay film music has a special place, having lasted 25 years. I’ve sung in about six languages, so I have at least 50 songs close to my heart. It’s been a diverse musical journey.

Usha: I’ve certainly enjoyed your music. It’s amazing how technology has changed the way we access music, from cassettes to streaming platforms.

Hariharan: Absolutely, technology has made music more accessible. You can now carry your entire music collection in your pocket.

Usha: I’ve watched your appearances on TV, like in Tamil Sa re Ga Ma. What’s your take on these reality shows?

Hariharan: They’ve unearthed incredible talent, both young and old. However, contestants often sing established songs. To truly become an artist, they must create and hold their own songs.

Usha: Wise words. You’ve received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri. What advice would you give to someone pursuing a full-time music career?

Hariharan: Learning music is fundamental. In today’s global music scene, being open to various musical styles is crucial. Keep your mind receptive.

Usha: You’ve collaborated with many renowned artists. Who would you like to work with in the future?

Hariharan: I’ve had a great partnership with Leslie in Colonial Cousins. There’s a unique chemistry between us that I cherish.

Usha: What’s next on your horizon?

Hariharan: I have a new album in the works, and I’ve recorded a tribute to the late Jagjit Singh. Additionally, my son, Akshay, who’s an electronic music producer, and I have some upcoming releases.

Usha: Speaking of your sons, I heard your son Karan is an actor.

Hariharan: Yes, he does act, and he makes his debut as a lead actor in  a Hindi movie ‘Pyaar Hai toh Hai’

Usha: That sounds intriguing. Lastly, any message for the Toronto audience for your upcoming concert?

Hariharan: Toronto has always been a great audience for me, regardless of the language I sing. I’m confident we’ll have a fantastic show together.
