On September 5, 2025, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) witnessed a landmark moment in global cinema with the inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion. Spearheaded by Shri Ajay Nagabhushan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), Mr. Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh, Acting Consul General of India in Toronto, Geoff Macnaughton, VP of Industry Development & Theatrical Exhibition at TIFF, and Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, this event marked not just a ceremonial unveiling—but the beginning of a new era for Indian storytelling on the world stage.
🎬 WAVES Bazaar: India’s Global Media Marketplace
At the heart of this year’s Pavilion is the debut of WAVES Bazaar, India’s first international e-marketplace for the film, media, and AVGC-XR sectors. Curated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), WAVES Bazaar is more than a digital platform—it’s a cultural conduit. It connects creators, producers, and buyers across film, television, gaming, animation, and music, fostering B2B collaborations and global partnerships.
What makes this debut even more powerful is its focus on women-led film projects. From over 200 submissions, six outstanding films helmed by women were selected by an international jury. As Shri Nagabhushan aptly stated, these filmmakers are “emissaries of a new era,” where women’s voices are not just heard but celebrated on the global cinematic platform.
🤝 Strengthening India–Canada Ties Through Cinema
Toronto, with its vibrant film industry and thriving Indian diaspora, is the perfect launchpad for this initiative. Mr. Singh emphasized that the Pavilion and WAVES Bazaar are timely steps toward deepening India–Canada cultural and business ties. TIFF’s leadership, particularly under Cameron Bailey, has long championed diversity and inclusion, making this collaboration a natural fit.
The discussions following the inauguration explored the possibility of establishing a dedicated film market at TIFF, with Indian content taking center stage. This vision aligns with India’s growing influence in global entertainment and its commitment to nurturing cross-cultural partnerships.
