Murmu, 64, becomes India’s second female president and the first person from India’s tribal community to take up the country’s top constitutional post.
In her inaugural address, the President expressed her gratitude and honour. As part of her speech, she said “Many brave women icons like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Rani Velu Nachiyar, Rani Gaidinliu and Rani Chennamma had taken to new heights the role of women power in defending and building the nation.”
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi congratulated her and said it is a ‘watershed moment for India’.
