Move over, Russell Peters. Zakir Khan is here!
India’s acclaimed storyteller and sakht launda returned to Toronto for an intimate evening of
stories, reflections, and poetry as part of Jaipur Literature Festival’s (JLF) opening night in
Toronto on Friday, September 25.
In Conversation with Zakir Khan was a personal, intimate and heart-warming event which took a
deeper dive into the storyteller’s journey, identity, language, and creative work, moving beyond
his comedy to include a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.The event was presented by
TO Live in association with JLF Toronto.
Rolling out everyday stories with quick wit and punch, it was no wonder then that JLF Toronto’s
opening night was an intimate evening of conversation, laughter, reflection, and storytelling as
Zakir stepped up his act to explore the many diverse lived experiences that have shaped his
work.
Naming Meridian Hall as, “the world’s best auditorium for any entertainer to perform in,” Zakir
spun childhood tales laced with humour and warmth. His literary repartee on everyday life
experiences drew cheers from a crowd of 3,000 attendees, mainly millennials and gen Zs who
could not get enough of their literary hero.
Known for his distinctive blend of humour, personal storytelling, and poetic expression, Zakir
brought audiences into a more intimate self-reflective space, where conversation, memory, and
storytelling came together in a shared one-of-a-kind cultural experience, revealing the
vulnerability, wit, and cultural insights that have defined his career.
While in conversation with Indian journalist Faridoon Shahryar on stage, Zakir traced his
childhood experiences and growing up in a modest household. His father was a music teacher
who took pride in sending his son to an English convent school. It was natural then, that Zakir
spoke about Papa Yaar, his stand-up comedy special, premiering last month, creating waves on
Netflix.
Born in Indore, Zakir rose to prominence after winning Comedy Central India’s Best StandUp
Comedian competition in 2012. Known for transforming everyday experiences into
universal stories, he has become one of India’s most influential contemporary performers.
His distinctive blend of humour, personal storytelling, and poetic expression have earned
him a strong following across India and the global South Asian diaspora. His signature
persona of a sakht launda has become a cultural touchstone for audiences across generations.
Having sold out multiple performances at Toronto’s Meridian Hall and Scotiabank Arena, and
completing successful international tours across North America, the Middle East, and Asia, Zakir
has made history as the first Indian comedian to headline a full Hindi stand-up performance at
New York’s Madison Square Garden.
From moments that feel instantly familiar to punchlines that catch you completely off guard, the
evening brought together the witty and heartfelt sides of Zakir Khan that audiences have come
to love.
And, coming back to Papa Yaar, the show gives a funny spin to the unspoken bond between
father and son and draws from Zakir’s childhood memories and his relationship with his father,
Ustad Ismail Khan.following his live tour in 60 cities across the globe.
At its core, Papa Yaar is a heartfelt exploration of a father-child relationship that evolves with
time. Through personal anecdotes, humour and reflection, Zakir captures the quiet
transformation of seeing a father not just as an authority figure, but as a person with dreams,
fears, flaws and stories of his own.
Deeply personal yet universally relatable, Papa Yaar celebrates the moment a father becomes
more than a parent — he becomes a companion, a confidant, almost a friend. Papa Yaar is a
celebration of fathers, friendship, and the conversations we wish we had started sooner.
Zakir breezed through the evening with laughter rides and taking audience requests to move a
bit away from pappa ki paris and talk and write more about mama’s warriors and brave mamas
themselves!
Here’s looking forward to a feminist edition of the one and only Zakir Khan!
