Ontario Celebrates the Accomplishments of Outstanding Seniors

On June 26th, The Ontario government recognized 22 exceptional seniors with the 2024 Ontario Senior Achievement Award for their outstanding contributions to the province and their communities. The 2024 recipients have made lasting impacts through volunteerism, charitable fundraising and advocacy around the province.

The Ontario Senior Achievement Award recognizes individuals who are making a meaningful difference in the lives and well-being of people in Ontario of all ages through community service and humanitarian efforts. This year’s recipients have made lasting contributions to their communities and empowered fellow seniors by leading cultural, artistic, educational and health-care initiatives that foster engagement and inclusion.

Local Mississauga award recipients include

  • James Carswell is a retired piano teacher, composer, and former owner of Carswell Music Studio. His volunteer work at Ivan Franko Homes, where he performs for residents, reflects his deep commitment to community and music. He founded a group of retired musicians and launched “Piano Space Exploration,” offering free intergenerational music classes and piano access for children. In 2024, he developed a piano-learning app and organized concerts with professional musicians. Also, a painter, James held his first art exhibition, enriching lives through creativity and compassion.
  • Sebastiao Francisco Louzado has volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for nearly 50 years across two countries. As Treasurer at St. Francis Xavier Parish, he manages finances and leads initiatives like fundraising, food and clothing drives and holiday food basket distributions. Known for his selflessness, Sebastiao has helped hundreds of families. His leadership and compassion inspire others and uphold the Society’s mission to support those in need with dignity and care.
  • Sadanand Mankikar is recognized for his dedication to seniors’ well-being in Ontario. He leads health and wellness programs through the Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation Canada and the Ontario Konkani Association, organizing seminars on diabetes, mental health, estate planning and more. His volunteer work spans the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and several NGOs. A committed fundraiser for seniors’ cultural and social initiatives, Sadanand’s compassionate service continues to uplift the community and exemplifies the power of selfless contribution.
  • Dr. Masoom Shah, co-founder and President of Pak Pioneers Community Organization of Canada, has supported over 8,000 South Asians across Ontario through programs for seniors, youth, newcomers and women. His initiatives—ranging from digital training to cultural events—foster connection and reduce isolation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he applied his microbiology expertise to keep his community informed. For over 20 years, despite personal health challenges, Dr. Shah has shown unwavering dedication to volunteerism, creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for all.

The Ontario Senior Achievement Award was created in 1986 to recognize outstanding seniors who, after the age of 65, have made significant contributions to their communities.

Congratulations to the award winners for their outstanding contribution to the community!
