The Malayalam rescue drama Manjummel Boys captivated audiences in the Indian Panorama section of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Based on a real-life incident, the film portrays an extraordinary tale of friendship, courage, and determination.
A Real-Life Rescue Drama
Inspired by events involving 11 Malayali youth from Manjummel, a village near Kochi, Kerala, the film centers on their visit to Devil’s Kitchen—better known as Guna Caves—in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. This site, famed for its appearance in Kamal Haasan’s Guna, turned into the backdrop for a near-tragedy when one member of the group accidentally fell into a deep pit.
When professional rescue teams gave up, Siju David, a member of the group, risked his life to save his friend in a daring rescue. The heroic mission highlights the power of selflessness and friendship, qualities that inspired Shri Chidambaram to bring this remarkable story to the screen.
Challenges of Bringing the Story to Life
Recreating the perilous Guna Caves was no easy feat. Due to the challenges of shooting on location, the production team meticulously rebuilt the cave in a warehouse in Kochi. Despite these challenges, Chidambaram emphasized that the cave itself serves as the film’s silent protagonist, shaping the narrative and testing the characters’ mettle.
“The industry was not ready for such a story a decade ago,” Chidambaram noted, referring to an earlier attempt to adapt the story. However, the evolution of Malayalam cinema and the rise of OTT platforms have paved the way for bold, unconventional storytelling.

The 55th IFFI celebrates the theme “Young Filmmakers: The Future is Now,” reflecting the vision of Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.
