TIFF is thrilled to announce the return of the Next Wave Film Festival for its 13th edition, generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Toronto. This eagerly anticipated event invites both young audiences and cinephiles to immerse themselves in a captivating weekend filled with exciting new films and special events. The festival will kick off with the exhilarating Battle of the Scores, where four promising bands will compete to score the silent short film Moontime, directed by Julia Harris and Adlyn Gilbert, offering attendees a thrilling opening night experience.

From April 11th to 14th, attendees can anticipate an electrifying showcase of emerging talent and innovative storytelling. Programmed with a focus on youth and by youth, the Next Wave Film Festival offers free screenings of Official Selection films to individuals under 25, ensuring accessibility to all. Tickets will be available for purchase starting March 13th for TIFF Members and Under-25 Pass holders, and to the general public on March 15th.

Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer at TIFF, emphasized the festival’s dedication to nurturing emerging talents and fostering a love for cinema among the next generation, highlighting its significant impact on shaping cultural landscapes and inspiring communities worldwide.

This year’s Official Selection features nine debut and sophomore features from various countries, including Canada, China, Sweden, Madagascar, India, Brazil, USA, and the United Kingdom, each exploring gripping and authentic stories of teenagehood and coming of age. Notable highlights include Luna Carmoon’s directorial debut “Hoard,” Mika Gustafson’s “Paradise Is Burning,” Youjia Qu’s “She Sat There Like All Ordinary Ones,” Shuchi Talati’s “Girls Will Be Girls,” and Luck Razanajaona’s “Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story,” among others.

In addition to film screenings, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in special events at TIFF Lightbox, including discussions with filmmakers and a screening of “The Concierge,” directed by Yoshimi Itazu. The festival will also feature the Young Creators Co-Lab, providing a platform for young and emerging artists in Toronto to connect with industry professionals and explore various aspects of filmmaking.

The Next Wave Committee, composed of 12 teen film enthusiasts, plays a pivotal role in planning teen-oriented events throughout the year, including the Next Wave Film Festival, serving as a unique talent incubator.

TIFF Members and Under-25 Pass holders can enjoy year-round benefits, including free access to more than 300 Cinematheque screenings, further enhancing their cinematic experience.

The festival’s lineup and additional information can be found at tiff.net/nextwave, promising an unforgettable celebration of the transformative power of film at the 2024 edition of the Next Wave Film Festival.
