TORONTO, ON, September 20, 2026. SMUDGE THE BLADES, the new feature film from Cody Lightning, has won the TIFF Best Canadian Discovery Award at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The award was announced on Sunday, September 20, at the TIFF Awards Ceremony in Toronto.
The award caps a strong festival premiere for the rousing sports dramedy, which premiered in TIFF’s Centrepiece programme and introduces audiences to the Treaty 6 Blades, a struggling U-18 hockey team from Northern Alberta. When the team is kicked out of its league, a local Zamboni driver, Willie Gladue (Lightning), steps behind the bench and attempts to guide the players through their final season together.
SMUDGE THE BLADES is directed by Cody Lightning and co-written by Lightning and Samuel Miller. Starring Cody Lightning, Jana Schmieding, Ed Helms and a talented ensemble cast of Indigenous hockey players, the cast also includes Paulina Alexis, Treycen Wuttunee, Isaiah Kakepetum, River Rayne Thomas, Elijah James Lee Moar, Tyler Halcrow and Ezekiel Mekanak.
“Winning the Best Canadian Discovery Award is pretty freaking deadly,” says Lightning. “This film is about wechetowin, people helping people and coming together. You see it on the ice, in the community and in the way this team keeps showing up for one another. That’s how we made the movie too. Everybody passed the puck, everybody did their part, and nobody left anyone on the bench.”
Inspired in part by Lightning’s experiences as a coach, SMUDGE THE BLADES uses hockey as both a source of joy and a lens through which to examine racism, resilience, community and belonging. The film’s players may be underdogs on the ice, but their story is about far more than the final score.
“We knew we wanted to make something like the sports movies we grew up with, but kids in Treaty 6 are dealing with much heavier shit than the kids in Mighty Ducks,” Samuel Miller adds. “So the goal was to find the magic, not just in spite of, but because of, the realities of where we were making it.”
The film’s authenticity is grounded in a cast that includes experienced performers alongside hockey players making their acting debuts. Their chemistry gives the Treaty 6 Blades a lived-in rhythm, from the chirping in the locker room to the pressure of the final shift.

The film is produced by Joshua Jackson and Cody Lightning of Lightning Mill Inc., Kyle Thomas and Sara Corry of North Country Cinema, Hayley Morin and Dylan Morin.
