In honour of the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne, the City of Markham has proclaimed June 2 to June 5, 2022 Platinum Jubilee Week. During these days, the City of Markham will participate in the National Illumination Initiative by illuminating both the Markham Civic Centre and the Markham gateway sign at Steeles Avenue and Markham Road in purple to commemorate this historic occasion.
“We have always celebrated Her Majesty’s milestones over the years including her Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees. The City of Markham is thrilled to mark this unprecedented anniversary for Her Majesty honouring her 70 years of remarkable service,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “I invite residents to visit the Markham gateway sign and the Civic Centre while the purple lightning is on display to take photos as a way to celebrate this memorable occasion.”
Federal buildings in Ottawa and elsewhere in Canada will be illuminated in purple, and other Commonwealth countries and numerous cities in the United Kingdom are taking similar action.
In addition to the lighting of the Markham Civic Centre and the Markham gateway sign, the City of Markham has also created a virtual book of congratulations that can be found online at YourVoiceMarkham.ca/
June 2, 2002 marks the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s Coronation Day, making Her Majesty The Queen, Canada’s longest reigning sovereign and the first to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.
In 2012, as part of the celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the City of Markham unveiled a portrait of Her Majesty The Queen that hangs in the Markham Civic Centre – Great Hall.
